Outgrown Sonos? What VSSL does differently for whole-home audio.

Why do Sonos systems drop out in larger homes?
Because every Sonos speaker is a wireless device competing for the same air as the phones, TVs and cameras. In a 1,500 square foot condo that works. In a two-story South Sound home with a shop and a patio, the speakers at the far end of the house lose the network. Playback stutters, and grouping rooms takes several tries. The fault is usually the network rather than the speakers, and a wireless system gives you no way to fix it other than more wireless.
What does VSSL do differently?
It moves the streaming into the rack and puts the speakers on wire. A VSSL amplifier is a multi-zone unit that mounts in your equipment rack, connects to the network over Ethernet, and drives passive in-ceiling or in-wall speakers over ordinary speaker cable. Each zone streams independently, so the kitchen plays one thing and the deck another, and a wired connection does not drop when the Wi-Fi gets busy. The speakers in the ceiling have no radios, no batteries and no firmware; they will be working in fifteen years.
What stays the same for the person holding the phone?
The apps. VSSL zones accept AirPlay, Google Cast and Spotify Connect, so you pick a room from the phone you already use and press play. What changes is reliability and the option of real control. VSSL has a Control4 driver, so room, source and volume appear in the Control4 app and on wall keypads next to lighting and shades. A "Dinner" scene can start the playlist along with the lights. Control4 interoperates with 25,000+ third-party products (Control4), and VSSL is one of them.

Sonos remains the right answer for a single room, a rental, or a house with no speaker wire and no plan to add it. VSSL is the answer when you want music in six rooms and the deck, want nothing visible, and are tired of the dropouts.
What drives the cost?
Zone count, speaker count and cabling. A VSSL amplifier is priced by the number of zones; each zone needs a pair of speakers and a cable run back to the rack. A finished house costs more to wire than one under construction, which is why we ask about audio at the prewire stage. The network matters too: the amplifier is wired, but the phone controlling it is not, so a house with weak Wi-Fi gets that fixed first (Wi-Fi and networking).
