What makes a theater professional grade?

How do we approach a Tacoma project?

Room analysis first. Whether the space is a dedicated theater or a media room conversion, we work through the same things. Screen size from the seating layout, a Dolby Atmos speaker design and subwoofer placement for balanced bass. Hidden wiring and equipment location, finishes that fit the house, noise isolation and acoustic treatment, and control integration. Which room styles do Tacoma homeowners choose?

What does Dolby Atmos add?

Height. Atmos uses ceiling or up-firing speakers and channel mapping so sound moves above the listener as well as around. We design Atmos layouts for the room rather than from a kit: 5.1.2 as the entry-level cinema, 7.2.4 for full cinematic performance, and 9.2.6 for a reference-grade room. Speaker brands include Bowers & Wilkins and Cambridge Audio, with Marantz processing, Sony displays and Kaleidescape for a movie library.

How does control work?

One remote. With Control4, pressing Movie dims the lights, powers on the screen and lowers the shades. The same remote runs Apple TV, Kaleidescape, Blu-ray, Xbox or PlayStation, and adjusts volume and lighting. Five remotes and a settings menu disappear. Control4 interoperates with 25,000+ third-party products (Control4), which is what lets one interface run gear from different makers.

How is the technology hidden?

In the walls, in the rack and behind art. In-wall and invisible speakers, the receiver and amplifiers in a rack, acoustic panels finished as artwork, motorized projector lifts and ultra-short-throw projection for tight rooms. A theater should look as good as it sounds, and in a living room it should look like a living room.

What drives the cost?

Room type, channel count, display choice and treatment. A bonus-room media setup with a display, in-ceiling speakers and control is the smallest job; a dedicated room with projection, a 7.2.4 layout, acoustic treatment and seating is the largest. Open walls lower the labor. A weak network raises the risk, so the network is checked first (Wi-Fi and networking).
