What do motorized shades do?

Move the windows on a schedule so you stop doing it. PowerShades are motorized roller shades controlled by app, remote, keypad or voice, and they integrate with Control4 for one-touch scenes (PowerShades). In practice that means shades that rise with the morning and lower at dusk, and a house that holds its temperature with less HVAC. It also means furniture and flooring that stop fading, and privacy without a cord. True PoE, wired or wireless?

It depends on the house.

• True PoE shades. One Ethernet cable from a PoE switch delivers power and control. The right answer for new builds and remodels, with no battery and no line-voltage work at the window.
• Wired shades. Low-voltage power from a central supply, stable and long-lasting, suited to large windows and whole-home projects where cable can be run.
• Wireless shades. Rechargeable motors that install with no new wiring, the usual choice for a finished house.

Each installation is measured and designed for the room, so the shades run quietly, align, and stop where they should.

How does Control4 integration work?

The shades become part of the house. Paired with Control4, a shade moves from a tap on a phone, a wall keypad or a voice command, and joins scenes with other systems. With lighting, the room stays evenly lit as the sun moves. With HVAC, the shades close before the afternoon sun loads the cooling. With security, an Away mode lowers them for privacy as the alarm arms. Control4 interoperates with 25,000+ third-party products (Control4), which is what lets the shades, lights and thermostat act as one system.

Which fabric?

It depends on what the window needs to do. Light-filtering fabrics keep the view and cut glare, and suit living rooms and kitchens. Blackout fabrics make a bedroom or media room dark. Designer patterns and textures match the room's furnishings. Openness, the percentage of light a fabric lets through, is the number to ask about. A low-openness fabric on a west window blocks heat. A higher one on a north window keeps the light. We bring samples to the measure visit so you see the fabric against the wall.

How does the process work?

Design, build, deliver. Design: we assess sunlight, privacy and the look of each room, and help choose fabric. Build: our own team wires, mounts and configures every shade. Deliver: you get schedules and scenes that run without attention. We handle shade selection, fabric coordination and integration with lighting and control so the result feels complete rather than added on.

What does it change day to day?

Less glare, lower energy use, privacy on demand, and a room that looks finished. Shades close on the sun-facing side in a July afternoon and open again for the evening. Bedrooms go dark at night and light at the alarm. The living room is private after sunset without anyone walking to the window. The technology is the means; the point is how the house feels.

What drives the cost?

Window count, shade size, fabric and motor type. Larger windows need larger motors, blackout and designer fabrics cost more than light-filtering, and PoE or wired installation costs more in a finished house than wireless.
