Home security without a subscription: pay monthly for people, not features.

Most doorbells and cameras now come with a monthly plan, and much of what it charges for is software running on hardware you already bought. Here is what runs free, what the plans charge for, and the short list of things worth a monthly bill.

You can run a home security system with no subscription. An Ajax alarm self-monitors free through its app, with photo alerts, and cameras recording to a recorder you own have no monthly fee. A monthly bill is worth paying for people: a central station that answers at 3 a.m., live guards on a few cameras, or someone who maintains the system.

The short answer

You do not need a subscription for a home security system to work. The alarm can reach your phone free, and cameras can record to a box in your house. What a monthly bill should buy is a person: someone who answers when you do not, or someone who keeps the system working.

That is the opposite of how most doorbells and cameras are sold. Their plans charge every month for features, and the features are software.

What the plans charge for

Ring's plans start at $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year for one device, $9.99 a month for every device at one home, and $19.99 a month for its Pro plan, as of October 2026 (Ring). The plans list recorded video playback and person, package and vehicle alerts. Ring says its products provide "certain features" without a plan.

SimpliSafe lists what works with no plan: the live camera feed and arming and disarming from the app (SimpliSafe). Camera recordings need its $9.99 a month self-monitoring plan. Professional monitoring starts at $22.99 a month, as of October 2026.

The features are software

In August 2026 XDA Developers wrote about the $40 Tapo D210 doorbell, which records to a microSD card and runs its detection on the doorbell itself, with no plan (XDA). The writer called Ring's subscription wall "a business model choice rather than a technical requirement."

That matches what we install. The Ajax alarm is free to operate when you self-monitor, with push alerts and the photo series from MotionCam detectors included (Ajax). Cameras on a recorder in the house record, search and play back from the app with no monthly fee. The security cameras page covers recording in detail.

One honest exception: in 2025 Ajax launched Ajax Cloud Storage, a paid plan that keeps event footage from its IndoorCam and DoorBell off site for 7 or 30 days (Ajax). It is optional, and it is worth it where a recorder could be taken.

One thing to know before you buy: the Ajax DoorBell and IndoorCam keep no recordings on their own. Ajax lists two places to save their video, an Ajax recorder in the house or Ajax Cloud Storage (Ajax). Without either, you still get live video, two-way talk and alerts, but no history (Ajax). A recorder is a one-time cost; the cloud is the monthly option.

What is worth paying for every month

Pay monthly for people, not features. Three things earn it.

  • Someone who answers at 3 a.m. Self-monitoring means the alarm reaches your phone and stops there. A central station sees the alarm and the photo, calls you, and calls for help if it is real. Ours is month to month; the price is on the Ajax alarm cost page.
  • Live guards on a few cameras. For a driveway, a side yard or a detached shop, a guard who sees someone and speaks through the camera can act before a door is tried. We install it with Deep Sentinel; details and pricing are on the remote video monitoring page.
  • Someone who keeps it working. Updates, a check that every detector still reports, and a person to call when something stops. That is our CURATOR care plan, and it is optional too.

What is not worth paying for

A monthly fee to see video your own camera recorded. A fee to be told a person, rather than a car, walked past. A lease on equipment you could own, or a multi-year contract to get a discount on hardware. If a plan's main feature is software, ask whether a recorder or a different camera does it once, for good.

The trade-off, plainly

No subscription does not mean no cost. Self-monitoring puts the response on you: if your phone is on silent, nothing else happens. A recorder in the house can be found, so it goes somewhere out of sight. And a system nobody maintains slowly stops reporting, one dead battery at a time.

Start from what you have. Most homes already own the hardware; the question is which monthly bills are buying a person and which are renting back a feature. The home security page shows how we put a system together.

Questions we hear

Can a home security system work with no monthly fee?

Yes. Ajax states its alarm is free to operate when you self-monitor through the app, with push alerts and photo series included. Cameras that record to a recorder in your home have no monthly fee either. What you give up is someone else answering when you cannot.

What does a Ring doorbell do without a plan?

Ring says its products provide certain features without a plan. Recorded video history and person, package and vehicle alerts sit in its paid plans, which start at $4.99 a month for one device, as of October 2026 (ring.com/plans).

What does SimpliSafe do without a plan?

SimpliSafe lists live camera view and remote arm and disarm as available with no plan. Camera recordings need its $9.99 a month self-monitoring plan, and professional monitoring starts at $22.99 a month, as of October 2026.

Does Ajax charge for cloud video?

Only if you add it. In 2025 Ajax launched Ajax Cloud Storage, a paid plan that keeps event footage from its IndoorCam and DoorBell off site for 7 or 30 days. The alarm, the app and the MotionCam photos do not need it.

Is professional monitoring worth paying for?

If nobody in the house will act on a 3 a.m. alert, yes. Self-monitoring means the alarm reaches your phone and stops there. A central station calls you, then calls for help. Our monitoring is month to month; the price is on the Ajax cost page.

Where should recorded video be stored?

On a recorder in the house, out of sight, so it survives someone taking a camera. A cloud copy is worth paying for when the recorder itself could be taken or damaged, which is the honest case for a cloud plan.

Do you lock customers into a contract?

No. You own every device from the day it is installed, and professional monitoring is month to month. Live guard monitoring through Deep Sentinel is the one service on a one-year term.
