No. Ajax detectors are wireless, an Ecobee thermostat uses the wires already in the wall, and a Control4 controller needs a network drop and power. Cameras are the one item that needs new cable.

What should I do first?

The network. Cameras, hubs and thermostats are data-heavy, and a consumer router with a few cheap access points is the most common reason a smart home fails.

How long does a thermostat take?

Under two hours in most homes. Ecobee replaces the existing thermostat on the same wiring, and its occupancy learning builds a schedule over about two weeks.

Do I need all five phases?

No. Each phase stands alone and is useful on its own. Each one you add makes the others more capable, and the order can follow whatever bothers you most.

What is the good news?

Most of it runs wirelessly. Ajax security detectors use their own encrypted radio, with a range of up to 2,000 m in open space (Hub 2 manual). An Ecobee thermostat replaces the one on your wall using the same wires. A Control4 controller talks to devices over the home network. The AI features with the most effect on daily life need very little new wiring. Those are alerts that know a person from a raccoon, a house that is the right temperature when you walk in, and scenes that respond to what the sensors see.

What has to be right first?

The network. AI-capable devices, cameras, thermostats, security hubs, recorders, move a lot of data, and a consumer router with a few cheap access points will not carry an integrated home reliably. Before any AI device goes in, we assess the network and, where needed, install wired access points on a managed switch with the smart-home devices on their own segment. Skipping this is the most common reason installations fail (Wi-Fi and networking).

What can you add without opening walls?

Four systems, in most South Sound homes.

Ajax security. MotionProtect motion detectors, DoorProtect contacts and MotionCam photo detectors all reach the hub wirelessly. The Hub 2 Plus sits in the equipment space on Ethernet, with Wi-Fi and two cellular SIM channels as backup (Hub 2 Plus). A MotionCam sends its first photo within 9 seconds (Ajax MotionCam), and Ajax cameras classify people and vehicles on the camera. Hardware carries a 24-month warranty (Ajax warranty).
Ecobee Premium thermostat. A drop-in replacement on the existing five-conductor wiring, with wireless SmartSensors for occupancy and temperature in other rooms. Its schedule learning takes about two weeks. Installation is under two hours, and the effect is a house that is the right temperature in the room you are in.
Control4. The integration layer. A controller needs a network drop and power, and from there it links the others. An Ajax event runs a lighting scene, Ecobee occupancy informs arming logic, camera footage is searched from one interface. Control4 interoperates with 25,000+ third-party products (Control4). The value is in the programming, which is the work of Nick Rhodes, our system integrator.
Voice. Josh.ai adds natural-language control on top of the same system with no new wiring beyond the network.

What needs cable?

Cameras. AI cameras from Luma classify objects on the camera and make footage searchable, but each one needs a wired run for power and reliability. In an existing home that means the attic, a wall cavity where there is access, or a surface run along trim where there is not. For most South Sound houses we reach the four exterior corners plus the garage and the front door without major disruption. The route depends on the construction and is settled on the site visit.

What order should you add them in?

Network, thermostat, security, Control4, cameras.

Network first. Alta Labs access points on a managed switch, zoned so smart-home devices are separated from the family's laptops.
Ecobee Premium. Immediate occupancy learning and air-quality monitoring, drop-in install.
Ajax security. Wireless detectors throughout, the hub on Ethernet, cameras integrated.
Control4 controller. The layer that connects everything and enables cross-system automation.
Luma cameras and recorder. AI video classification and search, tied into security and control.

Each phase stands alone and pays off on its own. You do not need all five; each one you add makes the others more capable, and the starting point is whatever frustrates you most about the house today.
