The question we hear most often from homeowners isn't "should I add AI to my home?" It's "can I add AI to my home — the one I already live in, without tearing out walls or starting from scratch?"
The answer is yes, for most of what matters. Here's how it actually works.
The Good News: Most AI Runs Wirelessly
The AI capabilities that have the most impact on daily life don't require new wiring. Ajax security sensors are wireless, encrypted, and communicate via their own radio protocol. Ecobee replaces your existing thermostat using the same wiring. Many Control4 drivers can communicate with existing devices over your home network.
The single most important infrastructure investment in an existing home is the network itself. AI-capable devices — cameras, thermostats, security hubs, NVRs — are data-intensive. A consumer-grade router and a few cheap access points won't support a fully integrated AI home reliably. Before adding AI devices, the network needs to be right.
Before any AI device gets installed, we assess the network. A properly designed wired access point system with managed switching is the foundation everything else runs on. Skipping this step is the most common reason smart home installations fail.
What You Can Add Without Opening Walls
Ajax Security — Wireless, Encrypted, Integrates with Control4
Ajax's entire sensor ecosystem is wireless. MotionProtect detectors, DoorProtect contacts, TurretCam and BulletCam cameras — all communicate via the Ajax Fibra or Jeweller radio protocols without running new cable. The Hub 2 Plus sits in your equipment space and connects to your network via ethernet.
The AI layer — behavioral anomaly detection, occupancy baseline learning — runs at the hub level. Once installed and given a few weeks to learn your home's patterns, it starts flagging genuine anomalies rather than generating constant false alerts.
Ecobee Premium — Drop-In Thermostat Replacement

Ecobee replaces your existing thermostat using the same wires — typically 5 conductors that are already there. The SmartSensor accessories place additional occupancy and temperature sensors throughout the home wirelessly. The AI occupancy learning starts immediately and takes about two weeks to build a reliable model of your schedule.
This is one of the highest-impact, lowest-disruption AI upgrades available for an existing home. Cost to install: typically under two hours. Impact: the house is the right temperature every time you walk into a room without you doing anything.
LUMA AI Cameras — Wired for Reliability
Camera installation in an existing home usually requires running cable — either through attic space, inside walls where access allows, or surface-mounted along trim in less visible locations. This is where the retrofit gets more involved. But the AI value is substantial: on-device object classification, intelligent video search, and integration with the security and control systems.
For most South Sound homes, we can run cameras to the four exterior corners plus the garage and front door without major disruption. The access route depends on the home's construction — we assess this during the site visit.
Control4 — The Integration Layer
Control4's EA-series controllers connect to your network and communicate with other devices over IP. The controller itself requires no new wiring beyond a network drop and power. What it enables is cross-system automation — the Ajax camera triggers the Control4 scene that handles lighting, the Ecobee occupancy data informs the security arm/disarm logic, the NVR footage is searchable through a single interface.
Adding Control4 to an existing home is largely a network and programming project. The physical footprint is small. The programming work is where the value comes from — that's Nick's domain, and it's what separates a system that works from a system that feels intelligent.
What the Upgrade Path Looks Like
For most existing homes in the South Sound, we recommend a phased approach:
- Network first — Alta Labs access points on a UniFi switch, properly zoned, with a managed network that separates IoT devices from primary traffic
- Ecobee Premium — immediate AI occupancy learning, air quality monitoring, drop-in installation
- Ajax security system — wireless sensors throughout the home, hub-level AI baseline learning, camera integration
- Control4 controller — integration layer that connects everything and enables cross-system automation
- LUMA cameras and NVR — AI video classification and intelligent search, integrated with the security and control systems
Each phase stands alone and delivers value immediately. You don't need all five to benefit from AI. But each one you add makes the others more capable.
