Wired or wireless security system: which one is better?

Which is better, wired or wireless?
Wireless for most finished homes and small businesses; wired for new construction and large commercial buildings; both together where the property calls for it. The choice is about the building, not about which technology is newer. We install both on the Ajax platform. Below: what each does well, where it costs you, and how we decide for a house in Kent or a warehouse in Tacoma.
What is a wired security system?
One where detectors, keypads and cameras connect to the panel over physical cable. Its strengths: no radio interference, no batteries in the detectors, and scale for large buildings with hundreds of devices. Its costs: cable through finished walls takes days and leaves patches. Moving a device later means more of the same. In an outage the whole system rides on the panel's backup battery. Ajax's wired line is Fibra, which carries power and data to detectors over a single cable and suits new construction and commercial sites.
What is a wireless security system?
One where detectors talk to the hub by radio instead of cable, and the quality of that radio is the whole question. Consumer sensors on Wi-Fi drop when the network does. Ajax uses its own encrypted Jeweller radio, and the facts that answer the reliability objection are published:
- Range. Jeweller reaches up to 2,000 m in open space, so a detached garage or a gate is covered from one hub (Hub 2 manual).
- Supervision. The hub polls every device every 12 to 300 seconds, 36 by default, so a detector that goes silent is reported before it becomes a gap (same source).
- Reporting. Hub 2 Plus keeps Ethernet, Wi-Fi and two cellular SIM channels, so a cut line or an outage does not stop the alarm reaching you or the station (Hub 2 Plus).
- Verification. A MotionCam sends its first photo within 9 seconds of a trigger (Ajax MotionCam).
- Warranty. 24 months from date of sale, batteries excluded (Ajax warranty).
Add tamper detection on every device, anti-jamming and battery power that keeps detectors working through an outage. A wireless system in a finished home is installed in hours with no cut walls. Its costs are the batteries, which last years and are flagged in the app, and the need for a design that checks radio paths, which is our job.

Wired hardware is often cheaper per device and more expensive to install; wireless is the reverse, and the total on a finished house usually favors wireless. What drives the cost of either is the number of openings and rooms covered, how many detectors take photos, cameras, and monitoring; the instant quote gives a figure in minutes.
When do we recommend each?
Wireless for a finished home, a condo, a rental or a small shop, because the building is done and the system should not undo it. Wired Fibra for new construction, where cable before drywall costs little, and for large commercial buildings with long runs and many devices. Both on one hub for a business with a finished front office and a warehouse behind it, or an estate with a main house and outbuildings. In every case the hub sits on a proper network with cellular backup, and monitoring through a UL-listed central station is month to month with no contract.
What does the decision come down to?
The building and how long you will own it. A homeowner who wants protection without a construction project chooses wireless. A builder or a facility manager who is opening the walls anyway, or who has a hundred doors to cover, chooses wired. Wired is often paired with wireless for the parts of the building that are finished. Ajax lets both run on the same hub and the same app, so the decision is per area rather than per property.
