PoE lighting merges them: LED fixtures powered and controlled through the same Ethernet cabling that runs your cameras, WiFi, and phones. Power over Ethernet delivers low-voltage DC power and data over a single network cable. PoE lighting applies that to illumination: each LED fixture connects to a PoE network switch with one Cat6 or Cat6A cable that carries both its power and its control signal. No line-voltage wiring to the fixture, no wall of dumb switches — every light becomes an addressable device on the network.

Because LEDs are DC-native and modern PoE standards deliver up to 90 watts per port, a single switch port comfortably drives a commercial fixture. Running Class 2 low-voltage cable is fundamentally simpler than running line-voltage circuits in conduit to every fixture. In new construction and tenant improvements, that difference compounds across dozens or hundreds of fixtures — and the cabling is pulled by the same crew, in the same pathways, as the rest of your network.

Every fixture reports what it uses

PoE switches meter power per port, so the lighting system tells you exactly what every fixture consumes, in real time. Combined with LED efficiency, occupancy sensing, daylight harvesting, and scheduling, lighting stops being a fixed cost and becomes a managed one.

Control without a control-system premium

Zoning, scenes, dimming, tunable white, occupancy response — behaviors that traditionally required a dedicated lighting control system are native to PoE lighting, because control is just data on the same cable. Reconfiguring a floor plan becomes software, not rewiring.

Class 2 power-limited circuits reduce shock and fire risk by design. Moves, adds, and changes to the lighting layer happen without opening line-voltage junction boxes above the ceiling.

Where PoE Lighting Fits Best — and Where It Does Not

The strongest cases are new construction, tenant improvements, and full renovations — anywhere the cabling is being planned fresh and the fixture count is meaningful. Offices, retail, hospitality, and conference-heavy spaces get the most from per-fixture control and analytics.

The honest counterpoint: PoE lighting is not automatically right for every building. A space with sound existing line-voltage wiring and no renovation planned rarely justifies ripping it out. Very high-output applications can exceed what a PoE power budget sensibly serves. And a PoE lighting system is only as reliable as the network behind it — switch power budgets, cable thermal performance in bundles, and backup power all have to be engineered, not assumed. When it is not the right fit, we say so; when it is, the numbers tend to make the argument themselves.

The infrastructure connection is the whole story: PoE lighting is a payload your cabling either can or cannot carry.
