Cat6, Cat6A, or Fiber: Choosing the Right Cable

Category choice is where budgets and future-proofing meet. Cat6 handles the workloads of most offices and retail spaces today. Cat6A costs more per run but supports higher speeds at full distance and carries PoE loads with better thermal headroom — which is why we specify it wherever high-wattage PoE or long service life is part of the plan. Fiber earns its place in backbones between equipment rooms, between buildings, and anywhere distance or bandwidth exceeds what copper can do.

The honest guidance: the cable itself is a fraction of total project cost. Labor, pathways, and finished-space access are the expensive parts — so installing a category you will outgrow is the one mistake you pay for twice. We spec for the building's next decade, not its next invoice.

What is the difference between structured cabling and network cabling?
Network cabling refers broadly to any cable carrying data. Structured cabling is a standards-based system: planned horizontal runs, an organized backbone, rack-based termination, and certified, labeled, documented cable runs. All structured cabling is network cabling — but most network cabling in commercial spaces was never designed as a structured system, which is why it becomes harder to manage every year.
How long does structured cabling installation take?
It depends on drop count, building access, and whether the space is occupied. Small offices are often completed in a few days; larger or occupied spaces are typically phased — including after-hours work — so business operations continue uninterrupted. A site walkthrough produces a firm schedule before any work begins.
Should I install Cat6 or Cat6A cabling?
Cat6 serves most current office workloads well. Cat6A supports higher speeds at full distance and handles Power over Ethernet loads with more thermal headroom, making it the better choice for spaces planning PoE lighting, cameras, or WiFi at scale — or any building where the cabling should outlive several generations of equipment. Because labor is the dominant cost, upgrading the category at install time is far cheaper than re-pulling later.
Can structured cabling be installed in an occupied business?
