What Is the Island Router

The Router Your Smart Home
Has Been Waiting For

Most consumer routers were built to a price point. They ship with foreign-manufactured hardware, rely on cloud infrastructure for management, and run operating systems that are hundreds of megabytes of code — most of it unnecessary, much of it a potential attack surface.

The Island Router was built by PerfTech, a company with 40+ years in enterprise and carrier networking — the same engineers who helped build the foundations of the early internet. Their hardware is assembled in Dallas, Texas. The enclosure is manufactured in Arizona. The firmware is written and loaded onto each unit in-house in the United States — specifically to prevent supply chain tampering.

The result is a router that operates at a fundamentally different level than anything you'll find on a retail shelf. No cloud dependency. No subscription. No foreign supply chain risk. Just fast, reliable, private networking that's been engineered for homes where the network matters — because everything depends on it.

We started specifying Island Routers into South Sound homes because our clients' systems demanded it. When your network is managing Ajax security cameras, Control4 automation, Ecobee climate, LUMA surveillance, and 50+ connected devices simultaneously, a $200 retail router is not the foundation you want.

Why It's Different

Built by Network Engineers.
Not a Consumer Electronics Team.

Most routers are designed to hit a retail price point. Island was engineered by PerfTech — a team with 40+ years building carrier and enterprise networks, 65+ US patents, and the architecture that helped power the early internet. That heritage shows up in every benchmark.

The result: a next-generation firewall that's best in class, a packet engine that eliminates queuing entirely so you actually get the speed you're paying your ISP for, and full network visibility from an app that doesn't require a networking degree to use.

Every security feature is on from the moment it boots. No setup. No config. No subscription to unlock it.

The Speed You're Paying For

Consumer routers queue packets under load — you lose 30–60% of your ISP-rated speed during peak hours. Island's proprietary packet processor runs at near wire-speed with 14M+ packets/sec throughput. No queue means no loss. You get what you paid for.

The FCC Ban

Why the Island Router Is the
Answer to the FCC Ruling

Every Major Brand Is Affected.
Island Router Is Not.

On March 23, 2026, the FCC added all foreign-manufactured consumer routers to its Covered List — blocking new models from receiving equipment authorization and cutting off security update eligibility by March 1, 2027.

  • Island Router is US-manufactured — not subject to the Covered List. New models can continue receiving FCC authorization. Security updates are not at risk.
  • Software loaded in-house in the US — PerfTech loads firmware onto each unit domestically, specifically to prevent supply chain interference.
  • No foreign manufacturing dependency — hardware assembled in Texas, enclosure from Arizona. No exposure to the geopolitical risks the FCC ruling addresses.
  • TP-Link, Netgear, Eero, Google Nest, Asus, Linksys — all manufactured overseas, all on the Covered List. Foreign routers stop receiving guaranteed security updates by March 2027.

Smart Home Integration

The Network Foundation
Everything Runs On

Every system in your smart home depends on the network. AI cameras, Control4 automation, Ajax security, Ecobee climate — they're only as reliable as the router routing their traffic.

Control4

Automation Backbone

Control4's reliability depends entirely on network stability. Island's no-queue architecture means Control4 commands execute in real time — lighting scenes, climate triggers, and security automations with zero lag.

Ajax Security

Security & Surveillance

Ajax cameras and NVRs stream continuous high-resolution video. Island handles the bandwidth and device density without the packet loss that causes recording gaps or delayed alerts on lesser hardware.

LUMA Cameras

AI Surveillance

LUMA X21 NVRs with AI analytics generate significant network traffic. Island's throughput handles multiple simultaneous HD streams without impacting the performance of every other device on the network.

Ecobee + SPAN

Climate & Energy

Ecobee's occupancy learning and SPAN's circuit-level monitoring both depend on continuous, reliable data transmission. Island ensures these devices communicate without interruption.

WiFi + Wired

Works With Any Mesh

Island Router is wired-only — purpose-built to decouple routing from WiFi for maximum performance of each. It works with any WiFi mesh system (Alta Labs, UniFi, Eero) placed in bridge mode.

OvrC + Domotz

Remote Management

Island supports OvrC and Domotz integration for professional remote monitoring and management — the tools we use to monitor client networks and resolve issues without an on-site visit.

Two Ways to Get Island

Both are legitimate paths. Choose based on your comfort level and what you're trying to accomplish.

PATH 01 — WEB ORDER

Order Pre-Programmed, Deploy Yourself

Both the Island Router ($849) and Island Router Pro ($2,199) ship pre-programmed with VLANs, firewall, DoH, and WireGuard already configured. Plug it in, download the app, and you're running enterprise-grade routing from day one. No configuration required to get the security benefits. The Island app walks you through device naming, user groups, and parental controls.

Best for: confident DIYers, existing IT-savvy homeowners, and anyone replacing a foreign router who wants the security upgrade without a service call.

FAQ

Common Questions

Does the Island Router replace my WiFi?
No — the Island Router handles routing only, and is specifically designed to decouple routing from WiFi so each performs at its maximum. You pair it with a WiFi mesh system (Alta Labs, UniFi, or others) set to bridge or AP mode. We design and install the full stack together.
Why does US manufacturing matter?
The FCC ruling makes it concrete: routers manufactured in foreign countries are now formally classified as national security risks. Beyond the regulatory angle, US manufacturing and in-house firmware loading means no opportunity for supply chain tampering — the hardware and software you install are exactly what was built and tested domestically.
Do I need the Pro version for my smart home?
For most full Control4 installations — cameras, NVRs, security, climate, automation, and 40+ devices — we recommend the Pro. The standard Island handles up to 5,000 devices on 1 Gbps service. The Pro's multi-gig capacity, higher throughput, and rack-mount form factor make it the right specification for complex smart home environments and any home with multi-gig ISP service.
Is there really no subscription fee?
Correct — one purchase price, full feature set, no recurring charges. This includes VPN, the full security suite, parental controls, OvrC/Domotz support, and all future software updates. Unlike enterprise-grade routers that require annual licensing, Island's entire value is in the hardware.
Can I use the Island Router with my existing ISP gateway?
Yes. Island works with any ISP gateway — you place the ISP modem/gateway in bridge or passthrough mode and let the Island handle routing. This is standard practice for any professional network installation and is part of what we configure during the installation process.
My current router is working fine. Why replace it?
If you have a foreign-manufactured router, the March 2027 security update deadline is the practical answer — your current router will stop receiving security patches within 12 months. For smart homes specifically, the reliability, device capacity, and privacy architecture of the Island Router addresses problems that only become visible when a system is under real load.
What does installation cost?
Island Router hardware is $499 (standard) or $1,299 (Pro). Installation labor, configuration, VLAN design, and integration with your smart home stack is quoted based on scope — typically $400–$900 for a standalone router replacement, more for full network redesigns. We provide fixed pricing before any work begins.
