Is AI in the home real yet?

Yes, in specific devices doing specific jobs, and Rivas Technology Group has them running in client homes today. Standing in a house in Gig Harbor or walking through one in Tacoma, we are not pointing at a roadmap. We are pointing at a camera, a thermostat, a hub, a panel and a recorder that observe and adapt. Here are the six, in the order clients notice them.

1. Cameras that know a person from a raccoon

The Ajax cameras we install run object classification on the camera itself. No video leaves the property to be analyzed, there is no cloud delay and no subscription to switch the feature on. The camera tells a person from a vehicle from an animal from a branch in the wind. At 2 a.m. the bushes do not wake you and a person at the front door does.

That changes how useful a security system is: homeowners stop ignoring alerts when every alert means something. Traditional motion-triggered cameras generate so many false alerts that most people turn notifications off, which defeats the system. See Ajax home security.

2. A thermostat that learns when you are home

The Ecobee Premium in our standard installations does not just run the schedule you set. It watches occupancy through its sensors and builds its own model of when rooms are used. After a few weeks it knows the kitchen is busy at 6:45, the upstairs is empty by 8:15 and the living room fills at 5:30. It conditions rooms ahead of that. You walk in and it is already comfortable, without a scene you programmed.

3. Alerts that are filtered before they reach you

The Ajax hub and app reduce false alarms at the source: pet-immune motion detection, photo verification and tamper detection on every device. A MotionCam sends its first photo within 9 seconds of a trigger (Ajax MotionCam), so you or the central station see what moved before deciding. The hub polls every device every 12 to 300 seconds so a silent detector is reported (Hub 2 manual). Fewer alarms, and the ones that fire warrant attention.

4. Air quality that triggers ventilation

The Ecobee Premium carries a built-in air quality sensor and reports when indoor air degrades: cooking, a full house, a smoky August afternoon. Through the control system, that reading can start ventilation and send a notification in real time rather than three hours later. In the South Sound, where summer smoke events have become a yearly fact, this moved from a novelty to a feature clients ask for.

5. A panel that watches every circuit

A SPAN smart electrical panel monitors energy draw circuit by circuit and manages large loads. EV charging can be scheduled into off-peak rate windows and the panel shows what each circuit is doing in the app. A circuit that normally draws a few amps and suddenly draws many is flagged before it becomes a failure, which used to take a separate monitoring install. 6. Video you can search instead of scrub

Recorders with AI analytics tag every event as it is recorded, by type, so you search instead of scrubbing. "Person at the front door, Tuesday, 10 to 2" returns the clips in seconds. For anyone who has pulled footage for a police report or an insurance claim, that is the difference between a two-hour evening and a two-minute one.

How do the six work together?

Through Control4, which acts as the orchestration layer. Each device is smart in its own domain; Control4 routes their events into everything else. When the security system sees everyone leave, it tells the thermostat to set back. When the camera sees a person approaching while the house is in away mode, it lights the entry and pushes the feed to your phone before you have parked. Is your house ready for this?

All six can be added to an existing home without major construction. Ajax is wireless, the thermostat replaces the one on the wall, the panel replaces the one in the garage, the recorder joins the network. The one non-negotiable is the network. Every one of these devices reports over it, and a camera that cannot reach the controller cannot deliver its alert. A wired network on an Island Router is the foundation, and it is where we start.
